Brief Description

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, established by the University of Otago in 2017, aims to recognize and assist high-achieving students with limited financial resources to pursue their tertiary education at one of New Zealand’s top universities.

Level/Field of Study

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship is available for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered at the University of Otago, except for the BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and medicine.

Number of Awards

Every year, the University of Otago awards up to 15 Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships to domestic students, and 5 scholarships to international students.

Target Group

The scholarship is open to both domestic and international students who have achieved academic excellence and can demonstrate financial need. Domestic students must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, while international students must hold a valid student visa.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions

Recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship receive a scholarship value of NZD $10,000 for their first year of study. In addition, they are also eligible for guaranteed accommodation in a university college or hall of residence for their first year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the scholarship,

  • Applicants must have achieved academic excellence, with a minimum of an NCEA rank score of 280 or equivalent for domestic students, and an equivalent of an NCEA rank score of 270 for international students.
  • They must also be able to demonstrate financial need, with a total family income of less than NZD $60,000 per year.

Application Instructions

  • Students can apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship through the University of Otago’s online scholarship application system.
  • The application period opens in August each year and closes in early October.
