Brief Description

Established in 2016, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship by The Ohio State University aims to support undergraduate students who are children of active-duty military personnel to study or intern abroad in underrepresented areas. Target Group

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is exclusively available for undergraduate students who are children of active-duty military personnel. These include children of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 to cover eligible expenses, including program fees, tuition, room and board, airfare, books, and other necessary study abroad-related expenses. The scholarship aims to support students with demonstrated financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship,

  • Applicants must be undergraduate students in good standing at The Ohio State University.
  • Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant for their study or internship abroad program.
  • Applicants must also be U.S. citizens and be enrolled in a program that is at least three weeks long in a country that is not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 3 or 4.

Application Instructions

The application for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship is open twice a year, for both summer and fall/fall academic terms. Applicants must submit a complete application, including transcripts, a detailed essay, and a study abroad program proposal, through the Gilman-McCain Scholarship website. Selected students will then be notified via email and must accept the scholarship award within a specific timeframe.
