Brief Description

Established in 2016, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship by The Ohio State University aims to support undergraduate students who are children of active-duty military personnel to study or intern abroad in underrepresented areas. This scholarship, named after veteran Senator John S. McCain III and his staunch support for education abroad, seeks to promote cultural exchange and understanding while providing financial assistance to students from military families.

Target Group

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is exclusively available for undergraduate students who are children of active-duty military personnel. These include children of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 to cover eligible expenses, including program fees, tuition, room and board, airfare, books, and other necessary study abroad-related expenses. The scholarship aims to support students with demonstrated financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship,

• Applicants must be undergraduate students in good standing at The Ohio State University.
• Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant for their study or internship abroad program.
• Applicants must also be U.S. citizens and be enrolled in a program that is at least three weeks long in a country that is not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 3 or 4.

Application Instructions

The application for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship is open twice a year, for both summer and fall/fall academic terms. Applicants must submit a complete application, including transcripts, a detailed essay, and a study abroad program proposal, through the Gilman-McCain Scholarship website. Selected students will then be notified via email and must accept the scholarship award within a specific timeframe.
