The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, established by the University of Otago in 2017, aims to recognize and assist high-achieving students with limited financial resources to pursue their tertiary education at one of New Zealand’s top universities.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship is available for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered at the University of Otago, except for the BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and medicine.

Every year, the University of Otago awards multiple Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships to domestic and international students.
Target Group
The scholarship is open to both domestic and international students who have achieved academic excellence and can demonstrate financial need. Domestic students must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, while international students must hold a valid student visa.
Scholarship Value/Inclusions
Recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship receive a scholarship value of NZD $10,000 for their first year of study. In addition, they are also eligible for guaranteed accommodation in a university college or hall of residence for their first year.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the scholarship,
- Be international students who are not citizens, permanent residents or resident visa holders of New Zealand or Australia*; and
- Have met the entry requirements for an eligible programme; and
- Have normally achieved a grade average equivalent to at least a New Zealand B+; and
- Be subject to paying international tuition fees; and
- Be intending to commence full-time study in that programme.
- * Australian citizens, permanent residents and resident visa holders may be eligible for this scholarship if they are residing outside of New Zealand at the time of study, as they would then be subject to paying international fees.

Application Instructions
- Students can apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship through the University of Otago’s online scholarship application system.
- The application period opens in August each year and closes in early October.
